UK chip design house Sondrel has re-branded as Aion Silicon as it joins the Intel Foundry alliance.
Aion provides design services and chip production services down to the 3nm leading edge process at foundries such as TSMC and Samsung with over 100 chip designs. It has signed a deal with Intel Foundry for AI, networking, automotive and 5G infrastructure chips.
This has made the company one of the leading global design houses. The company replaced its CEO in 2024 after a funding deal was approved by the UK government. New CEO Oliver Jones, is aiming to tap into the growth in advanced chips for AI workloads, edge computing and custom silicon with capabilities from concept and chip architecture through volume production.
“Aion Silicon marks the beginning of a new chapter—not just for us, but for our customers,” said Jones. “The semiconductor industry is at an inflection point where the AI revolution is driving unprecedented demand for specialized, high-performance chips. We’ve taken the best of our 20-year legacy as Sondrel and rebuilt our company around what customers need most today—a high-touch, consultative experience with design excellence and maximum risk reduction. Aion Silicon is here to deliver those solutions.”
The deal with Intel Foundry sees Aion join the Accelerator Design Services Alliance as part of a push into the US.
“We’re pleased to welcome Aion Silicon to the Intel Foundry Accelerator Design Services Alliance,” said Suk Lee, VP & GM, Ecosystem Technology Office at Intel Foundry. “Aion Silicon’s deep end-to-end expertise spans SoC architecture, front-end design, and back-end implementation which aligns well with our mission to reduce barriers and speed the development of custom silicon solutions. Together, we’re enabling customers to co-develop high-performance products that take full advantage of Intel’s advanced nodes and ecosystem.”
“Our inclusion in the Intel Foundry Accelerator Design Services Alliance is a strong validation of Aion Silicon’s engineering depth and collaborative approach,” said Jones. “With over 100 successful tapeouts and two decades of SoC architecture and implementation leadership, we know the most critical design decisions are made before a single transistor is placed. This collaboration allows us to combine Intel’s advanced process capabilities with Aion’s risk-reducing design services.”
