Sonical to show wearables with hearing OS at CES
US startup Sonical will be showing its CosmOS Operating System for the Ear across a range of products at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January.
The CosmOS operating system was launched by Sonical last year to provide AI plug-ins for ear worn products that can be configured by the user rather than by the device manufacturer at the point of build. This opens up customisation using third party apps.
Hearable designs using CosmOS include a stand-alone smart audio module that upgrades every existing headset or TWS earbuds using downloadable plugins. In addition, there will be a range of wireless platforms that have integrated CosmOS, these include Bluetooth, UWB and WiFi.

The flexibility and personalisation of the OS is key to ‘Headphone 3.0’ where a headset normally used for the single purpose of listening to audio can now also be used for many other applications. These use cases will use sensors, such as EEG electrodes, along with other body metrics for healthcare monitoring and lifestyle improvements.
UK engineer Spittle founded Sonical in 2020 to focus on the rapidly developing Headphone 3.0 market and as well as CosmOS the startup is developing a dedicated RISC-V processor specifically designed for hearables running downloadable plugins. This will unlock the large number of app developers that have created advanced AI based algorithms.
