Sony increases CIS market share as Samsung, Omnivision retreat

The CMOS image sensor market was worth $21.29 billion in 2022 flat with 2021 and reflecting difficulties in the smartphone market, according to Yole Group.

The flatness of the market reflects weakness in the mobile phone sector which is responsible for about 63 percent of the market. The market analyst is forecasting a 5.1 percent compound annual growth rate between 2022 and 2028.

Sony increased its market share to 42 percent in 2022 from about 39 percent in 2021. Meanwhile Samsung and Omnivision lost market share. Sony’s increased share also reflects its more diverse offering in CMOS image sensors. The top five vendors continue to be Sony, Samsung, Omnivision, STMicroelectronics and OnSemi.

However the smartphone share of the CMOS image sensor market will only enjoy a CAGR of 3.7 percent over the 2022 to 2028 period, Yole reckons, which implies it will gradually lose market share. Yole stated that 2022 showed that a transformation is underway in the market structure with growth of the automotive segment and an increase in the CIS average selling price.

OnSemi enjoyed an exceptional 2022 almost doubling market share to 6 percent in its fifth ranked position, boosted by its exposure to the automotive and industrial markets. Chinese suppliers GalaxyCore and SmartSens have retreated, apparently due to the disinflation of the low-end mobile and security camera markets.

Chinese CIS suppliers will aim to decrease their exposure to these markets and gain market share in those that are thriving and deliver higher value and ASP : Automotive and industrial said Yole.
