Despite recent political turmoil, the authorities in South Korea have accelerated approvals for the world’s largest semiconductor industrial complex.

The approvals for the Yongin Semiconductor National Industrial Complex come three months ahead of the initial target, with building plans also accelerated by three years to start by December 2026. This is a response to the US and EU Chips Acts and Japanese semiconductor boost with Rapidus says Kim Yong-kwan, president of Samsung Electronics DS Business Strategy.

The complex will cover 7.28 million square metres with six fabs, three power plants, and over 60 material, parts, and equipment partner companies, primarily small and medium-sized enterprises. Under the new timetable the first fab is planned to start operation by 2030.

The approval ceremony was held at the Giheung Campus of Samsung Electronics in Gyeonggi Province on December 26th. The project is expected to attract private investment of up to KRW300bn ($200bn), creating 1.6 million jobs.

“When the Yongin Semiconductor National Industrial Complex is completed, surrounding traffic is expected to become a major issue. In the case of the Pyeongtaek plant in Gyeonggi Province, even though a six-lane road was secured during the complex formation, many problems occurred during daily commuting,” said Kim at the opening. “When the hinterland city moves in, severe traffic problems are likely to occur, so the expansion of local roads is essential.”
