The facility with an area of approximately 360,000 square meters will allow self-driving car developers to repeat their tests with various scenarios and road environments. Due to open in October 2017, the facility will host bus-only lanes, expressways, zones for autonomous parking and so on. The project into which approximately 11 billion won (just under 8.96 million Euros) are to be invested is expected to attract a large number of South Korean companies, such as SK Telecom, Naver and Samsung Electronics as well as automakers like Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Motors.

According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure & Transport of South Korea, the K-City is currently under construction based on the intelligent transportation system of the Korea Transportation Safety Authority. Expressways in the K-City are to be opened in the second half of this year while the reminder of the facility will be completed and opened in the first half of 2018. The test-bed won’t require autonomous cars to have any operation permit from the government.
