South Koreans turn against 5G over poor performance

South Korea was the first country to provide fifth generation cellular communications but according a senior politician subscribers are cancelling contracts and going back to their old 4G-only service, reports Nikkei.

“As many as 562,656 people have switched from 5G to LTE,” said Hong Jung-min, a politician from South Korea’s Democratic Party and a member of the National Assembly’s Science, ICT, Broadcasting and Communications Committee. This number represents about 6.5 percent of South Korea’s total number of 5G subscribers with its three domestic service providers – SK Telecom, Korea Telecom and LG Uplus – at the end of August.

Among the reasons for giving up on 5G are: poor coverage, little benefit over 4G, extreme power consumption and high prices.

Apparently poor coverage can mean the mobile phone must frequently switch between 5G and 4G, which takes up a lot of time, reduces the download speed benefit claimed for 5G and flattens the battery.
