Square light guides offer low-cost custom variations
A design feature of the devices is that the 10-column array versions have multiple, tiny light elements closely spaced together enabling the integrated diaphragm to prevent light bleed even when different colours are adjacent to one another.
There are many types and sizes available ex-stock and a myriad of custom variations are possible with little or no tooling costs. Most Mentor light guides / light pipes have the option of a diffused, frosted effect. Self-colouring of the light guides / light pipes is another option – this allows the potential illuminated colour to be shown even when the LED is in an ‘off’ status.
Three standard types of square light guides / light pipes have been introduced: front-panel mounted; horizontal single-row PCB-mounted; and horizontal 3-row PCB-mounted.
The front-panel mounted light guides supplement Mentor’s front panel light guide / light pipe range, and the devices feature a chamfered square radiating surface of 3.2 x 3.2 mm. Three standard lengths are available ex-stock with other lengths offered as custom options with little or no tooling costs.
The horizontal single-row mounted light pipe arrays have miniaturised radiating surfaces of 1.4 mm x 1.4 mm and are available in versions of between 1 and 10 columns. A standard Length of 8.1 mm is offered ex-stock but custom lengths between 5.6 mm and 15 mm are available with low MOQs and little or no tooling costs.
The horizontal 3-row PCB-mounted types have miniaturised radiating surfaces of 1.4 mm x 1.4 mm and are available in versions of between 1 and 10 columns (3-30 elements). A standard Length of 2.8 mm is offered ex-stock but custom lengths between 2.8 mm and 45 mm are available with low MOQs and little or no tooling costs.
