At the same time Nichia dropped two places to seventh and OmniVision broke into the top ten from 13 th position in 2017. The top ten companies held 39 percent of the worldwide OSD market in 2018, the same level as in 2017.

Optoelectronics giant Sony in Japan – the largest supplier of CMOS image sensors – maintained its number one position in the OSD ranking with sales totaling nearly $7.1 billion in 2018, which was $3.1 billion more than second-ranked Sharp in Japan.

After a strong 19 percent rise in 2017, Sony’s OSD sales growth slowed to 3 percent in 2018 due to weak demand for CMOS image sensors in the maturing smartphone market and falling unit shipments of laser pick-up devices for optical-storage disc drives.

But the strongest growth came from STMicroelectronics with a 25 percent increase in OSD sales. About half of ST’s increase in was generated by discrete semiconductors, which grew 27 percent to $1.3 billion in 2018 partly because of higher selling prices for power transistors, power diodes, and other parts that were in short supply in the marketplace during the year. The other half of ST’s OSD sales increase came from optoelectronics revenues, which surged 48 percent to $903 million for image and light sensors.

CMOS image sensor supplier OmniVision, achieved sales growth of 10 percent in 2018 to about $1.6 billion. Although operationally based in Silicon Valley the company was acquired by Chinese investors in 2016 and the company is third largest supplier of CMOS image sensors.
