ST falls to fifth in analog IC vendor ranking
Meanwhile top-ranked Texas Instruments, Infineon Technologies, Skyworks Solutions and Analog Devices all showed modest year-on-year growth to help cement their positions at the top of the ranking. The fastest growing analog vendor in the ranking is NXP Semiconductors, which has benefited from its acquisition of Freescale Semiconductor.
IC Insights attributed ST’s analog sales decline to soft equipment sales amongst its primary customers in computer, consumer, automotive and industrial. Clearly this must be down to having the wrong customers, as no such softness was experienced by Infineon and NXP. The three European IC suppliers accounted for 15 percent of the analog market in 2015, down from 16 percent marketshare in 2014.
Overall the analog chip market grew 2 percent in 2015 to reach $47 billion, according to IC Insights. General-purpose analog products (amplifiers/comparators, interface, power management, an signal conversion devices) increased 2 percent to $19.1 billion and sales of application-specific analog devices also improved 2 percent to $27.9 billion.
Skyworks Solutions makes analog and mixed-signal semiconductors for Apple, Samsung, and other suppliers of mobile devices. The company plans to expand into the automotive, home, and wearable markets to develop its presence in applications linked to the Internet of Things.
IC Insights forecasts the total analog market to grow 4 percent in 2016, reaching $49.1 billion and then surpass the $50.0 billion mark for the first time in 2017 as analog sales climb to an expected $51.4 billion. From 2015 to 2020, the analog market is forecast to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 6 percent, one point higher than the total IC market.
