ST samples MCU with embedded phase-change memory

This was revealed by Marco Monti, president of the automotive and discrete group (ADG) at STMicroelectronics, speaking at the ST financial analysts’ day held in London.

The upcoming microcontroller for electronic control unit (ECU) applications will include up to six Cortex-R52 processor cores running at up to 400MHz clock frequency and 16 or 32Mbytes of embedded PCM.

ST’s decision to use PCM was revealed at the same event a year before by Jean-Marc Chery, chief operating officer of ST (see ST opts for phase-change memory on 28nm FDSOI). Chery is designated CEO of the ST and due to take over the top job at the end of May on the retirement of Carlo Bozotti.

Monti described the technology as “disruptive” and that a six core chip with high clock frequency was providing up to 15 times the performance of typical single-core ECUs.

Monti said that samples have been provided to a lead customer and the technology is in qualification for automotive use with that customer.
