STMicroelectronics buys NFC, RFID assets from AMS
The additional sum is set at a maximum of $37 million but at present is estimated to be approximately $13 million, ST said.
ST has acquired intellectual property, technologies, products, and business contracts related to NFC and RFID reader business. About 50 engineers have also transferred to ST from AMS as part of the deal. ST said the acquisition is complementary to its secure microcontroller business finding applications in mobile devices, wearables, banking, industrial, automotive and IoT markets.
“Security and NFC connectivity are key prerequisites for the broad rollout of mobile and IoT devices anticipated in the coming years,” said Claude Dardanne, general manager of STMicroelectronics’ microcontroller and digital ICs business unit.
An NFC controller developed by AMS is already sampling under the ST brand as is a two-die component that includes the NFC controller and secure element from ST.
