The figures offset a second half in which TSMC’s sales were often down year-on-year. As a result, TSMC’s full year sales were NT$977,447 billion (about $33.0 billion), an increase of 3.1 percent compared to 2016.

In contrast, fellow Taiwan-based foundry United Microelectronics Corp. saw its sales fall in December to NT$10,668 billion (about $360 million), down by 15 percent compared with December 2016. UMC’s sales for 2017 were NT$149,285 billion (about $5.05 billion) up nearly 1 percent on sales in 2016.
