Successful home energy sensing Kickstarter project ships
The project, which was launched in late 2013 and raised over 280% of its funding goal, features an electricity sensor – called Neurio – that connects to a home’s breaker panel and keeps track of usage. It sends that data via Wi-Fi to the cloud for analysis and formatting, and then on to a user’s Android or iOS smartphone.
The device is intended to "make an ordinary home smart" by giving users a better idea of where and how the electricity in their homes is being used. Instead of requiring a sensor be attached to every device and appliance in a home, the system is able to identify individual appliances via training with a homeowner, allowing users to reduce energy use by focusing on the biggest energy using devices in their homes.
Current features include:
- Real-time energy monitoring, with historical usage
- Appliance detection, currently limited to top eight appliances
- Event list showing when detected appliance were used
Neurio is open platform and works with other web-based services and smart home devices. Planned additions include improved appliance detection, integration with other smart home products, and smart notifications.
Neurio comes with two current transformers, a voltage cable, Wi-Fi antenna, and mounting hardware. Optional solar and three-phase home packages are available.
