According to the Nikkei, the company will invest JPY15 billion (US$132 million) to set up a factory for curved-surface AMOLED touch panels based on thin-film substrates, more than tripling its actual production capacity with potentially more than 100 million units to be shipped annually by 2018.

The Japanese company entered the glass-based touchscreen panels business for rigid-type OLED displays back in 2011 and went on to develop a film-based touchscreen panel to capture the increasing demand for flexible type OLED displays. Production started in 2014. As the use of flexible-type displays is likely to extend from bendable displays with partially curved surfaces to foldable displays, Sumitomo Chemical who currently boast a global share of over 60% of the glass substrate-based AMOLED touch panels market wants to maintain its leading position throughout the technology shift.
