Sumitomo taps Point2 chip for 25G optical modules

Sumitomo Electric Industries (SEI) is looking to use chips from Point2 Technology in the US for 25G optical transceiver modules for 5G and 6G wireless network infrastructure.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) will see SEI use the Electrical Dispersion Compensation (EDC) technology in a mixed-signal SoC from Point2 Technology for its next-generation 25G DWDM optical transceiver modules.

These modules are specifically designed to support fibre optic infrastructure upgrades for carriers and cable internet providers (MSOs) and the build-out of 5G/6G fronthaul and backhaul networks by wireless service providers.

“Our EDC mixed-signal SoC offers single-chip operation at 500mW, enabling 25G DWDM optical module operation at less than 2.5W while lowering the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) by 40%,” said Sean Park, founder and CEO of Point2 Technology.

The Point2 UltraRange P3A280 25G NRZ chip integrates an EDC engine and nonlinear DSP to compensate for chromatic dispersion in fibreoptic cables up to 40 km long with less than 2.5W of power consumption. The RangeXtender 25G DWDM SFP Module reference platform includes production-ready board design and firmware ready for deployment.
