The component was created to simplify high-voltage regulation in portable instrumentation and other industrial applications requiring high voltages. It is a hysteretic controller that works at a fixed, user-set frequency between 40kHz and 400kHz and with four duty cycle options between 50 and 87.5 percent.

Given its hysteretic nature, the controller is naturally stable, with no feedback compensation requirements to consider, Supertex said.

Designed to work with an external MOSFET, the HV9150 supports power levels of up to 5W. The gate voltage for the off-board MOSFET can be generated from a lower voltage with an on board charge pump, or from a higher off board voltage through an on board linear regulator. Other features include a ground switch in the feedback path for power savings when the chip is in the low-power state and provision for an external reference voltage.

“Supertex is a strong supplier of solutions in this space, and the Company is rapidly working to expand its relationships with other key suppliers and customers in this market,” states Jimes Lei, Director of Application Engineering of Supertex. “Supertex will continue to improve its unique process capabilities, and provide increasing levels of service and value to its expanding base of MEMS customers.”

The HV9150 comes in a 16-lead QFN package and it is priced at 77 cents in 1,000 unit quantities.
