Smaller, higher performance digital cameras and portable devices equipped with cameras, require thinner, more compact electrical components. In addition, with added functionality comes an increase in current, which brings a need for lower power consumption. A sufficient amount of light is required from the LED for correct focusing of the subject, making it difficult to reduce the size and thickness, making hemispherical lens LEDs the mainstream choice.

In response, ROHM designed the CSL701/801 series utilising an optical design based on a smaller light-emitting element along with an aspherical lens developed through proprietary moulding technology, resulting in the industry’s smallest (2924 size: 2.9 x 2.4 mm) surface mount aspherical lens LEDs. Improved heat dissipation characteristics make it possible to reduce size while enabling high output.

Lower current consumption is also provided at the same luminosity compared with conventional products and an optical axis deviation of only ±3% delivers sufficient lighting even for objects far away
