Since even the slightest changes in the mountings of the exterior mirror cameras lead to significant shifts in the image displayed, the field of vision of the driver is quickly restricted and thus possibly compromised safety. Adasens’ development aims at automatic calibration during the journey, which provides reliable images based on motion vectors and their vanishing points in combination with the vehicle’s sensor system.

The method of developing Adasens is based on an optical flux field, on which the corresponding vanishing points of the vectors are calculated, which provide information about two of the three required rotation angles for automatic camera calibration. In addition, the orientation of the street level relative to the camera is determined to calculate the third angle. The correction of the displayed image is based on this total calculation of the rotation of the camera in the holder. In addition to the adjustment of the image section, “Adasens’ method paves the way for further driver assistance systems that require precise camera calibration,” says Florian Baumann, head of development at Adasens Automotive GmbH, describing the areas of application of the presented system. The solution is not limited to the use of exterior mirror cameras, but is also used with appropriate adaptations for lane change assistants as well as for front and rear cameras of parking assistance systems.

Adasens Automotive GmbH is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Spanish Ficosa Group, a system supplier of communication technologies, driver assistance systems, mirror concepts and development services for autonomous driving, among others.
