Worldwide shipments of computer tablets were 39.6 million units in 3Q24, up 20.4 percent year-on-year, according to International Data Corp.
The jump is due to a dismal 2023 but optimism is growing said IDC with a few product refreshes having taken place and the hope of strong sales in the holiday season.
AI has yet to figure significantly in the market but again vendors are optimistic that AI-capable tablet computers could command higher average selling prices.
The ranking by 3Q24 shipments is: Apple, Samsung, Amazon, Huawei and Lenovo. Amazon has moved above Huawei compared with a year before.
But Amazon and Huawei both gained market share at the expense of the other three. Amazon more than doubled shipments while Huawei increased shipments by 44 percent year-on-year.
“There are several appealing opportunities for vendors to increase their presence in the tablet market – collaboration with educational institutions, entertainment and gaming, cross device connectivity, integrations in healthcare and many more. Embracing AI-powered features to enhance user experience will facilitate growth across these areas. Recent innovations in AI have begun to attract consumers willing to pay a premium price.” said IDC research analyst Anuroopa Nataraj, in a statement.
