Tektronix buys Optametra for coherent optical testing
Optametra is a pioneer in coherent light testing for use in R&D and manufacturing. It was founded in 2007 and launched its 40G Coherent Lightwave Signal Analyzer in March 2009 and followed up with a 100G later that same year.
Coherent lightwave signal analysis enables understanding and optimization of optical networks using advanced modulation schemes to achieve transmission rates of 100G and beyond.
“The emergence of coherent optical standards is creating a technology shift in the communications market and new testing challenges are emerging,” said Amir Aghdaei, President of Tektronix, in a statement.
Optametra banks on the compelling value proposition of complex (amplitude and phase) optical modulation that allows carriers to smoothly grow data rates without pulling new fiber. The company claims that carriers such as Verizon and network equipment manufacturers such as Alcatel-Lucent have demonstrated 112 Gb/s transmission in an otherwise-10 Gb/s channel using complex modulation. By comparison, conventional modulation leaves 90 percent of the fiber capacity unused.
Recently, Optometra added 3-D analysis and visualization capabilities to view text waveform constellations in three dimensions instead of two, thereby enhancing the utility of coherent signal analysis on oscilloscopes. "With Optametra’s focus on coherent, we continue to provide industry-leading relevant signal analysis capabilities, now including 3-D constellation display", said Daniel van der Weide, Optametra’s Vice President of Engineering.
