In job advertisements posted in the past few weeks on LinkedIn, the company says that it is “building a research team for our Auto-drive Team based in Palo Alto, CA.” The postings are recruiting engineering positions in areas including motion planning, sensor fusion, vehicle intelligence, and machine learning.

“As a Chinese company which is pursuing new markets and growing rapidly in the US,” the company posted in the listings, “we maintain an entrepreneurial spirit and open mindset.”

Currently about five dozen companies are permitted to test self-driving cars on California roads. However, Reuters reports that as of last month, state records did not show Tencent having an autonomous vehicle testing permit.

Earlier this years, Tencent reportedly received the go-ahead to test self-driving cars on some public roads in Shenzhen. This followed two of the company’s Chinese competitors – Internet search engine Baidu and e-commerce giant Alibaba – which have already been conducting self-driving tests in China.
