According to business news network CNBC, Tesla is looking to develop its own artificial intelligence (AI) chip for self-driving cars. Sanjay Jha, CEO of AMD spin-off semiconductor manufacturing company GlobalFoundries (Milpitas, CA), apparently told the network that his company was working directly with the car maker.

Tesla will reportedly build its own custom chip design on top of AMD intellectual property. More than 50 people are working on the project under Jim Keller, well-known chip designer and head of Autopilot hardware and software at Tesla, CNBC reported.

Tesla hired Keller last year. Prior to joining the car maker, Keller had been leading the development of AMD’s Zen processor architecture, and before that had worked at Apple helping it create its own mobile processors.

Tesla has been using an Nvidia platform for its Autopilot 2.0 driver assist feature. It’s not clear how this partnership could change going forward. When announcing the Autopilot 2.0, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that the decision had come down to choosing between AMD and Nvidia.

This news comes just days after Alphabet self-driving car subsidiary Waymo announced that it is partnering with Intel on its autonomous driving technologies. Watmo’s new vehicles will use Intel-based technologies for sensor processing, general compute, and connectivity, reportedly enabling real-time decisions for full autonomy in city conditions.
