
Tesla plans to hire up to 10,500 workers for its Gigafactory near Berlin, which is currently under construction. According to media reports, the plans for the factory include a complete vehicle production facility, with foundry, body press shop, paint shop, drive train production and final assembly. A three-shift operation is planned; between 3,000 and 5,000 people are to work each shift.
In its application for environmental approval, Tesla gives details of the number of employees per shift, according to media reports. There is also talk of up to 12,000 direct jobs.
The planned factory is connected to the A10 Autobahn via the Freienbrink junction. A temporary exit on the A10 is planned, which Tesla intends to build and finance itself until a regular new motorway exit is ready. However, the planning of the traffic connection is still in its infancy, it is said.
Environmental planning is also not yet complete. However, Tesla has already cleared part of the area at its own risk and is preparing the construction.
Meanwhile, 600 km further southwest, at Daimler headquarters in Stuttgart, they are thinking about other things: It’s about how to get rid of workers. Already weeks ago, reports appeared that 10,000 to 15,000 jobs will be lost due to the Corona crisis and in its wake the worldwide sales slump. Now Daimler’s head of human resources Wilfried Porth provided more details: The figures circulated so far will not be sufficient, Porth told the German Press Agency dpa. “The new number is definitely bigger”, the personnel manager said. Currently the carmaker employs some 300.000 workers worldwide.
The job cuts may not only be due to the Corona crisis. Costs must also be optimized, the company said. And then there is also electric mobility, where Daimler is not considered a front row player. In addition, voices are being raised calling for the confusing product range to be cleaned up.
