Tesla is recalling 2m electric vehicles in the US after problems with the Autosteering software.

The Tesla recall covers the software which provides Level 2 driver assistance with lane keeping capabilities and is part of the Autopilot software.

Autosteer is designed and intended for use on controlled-access highways and the driver remains responsible for the vehicle’s movement with their hands on the steering wheel at all times, remaining attentive to surrounding road conditions. When Autosteer is engaged, it uses several controls to monitor that the driver is engaged in continuous and sustained responsibility for the vehicles operation as required. If the driver attempts to engage Autosteer when conditions are not met for engagement, the feature will alert the driver it is unavailable through visual and audible alerts, and Autosteer will not engage.

Tesla has been in negotiations with the US regulator that led to this voluntary recall with an over the air (OTA) update to add more restrictions to the software.

The recall is less important for the European market, where Tesla is the top selling electric vehicle maker. It has shipped around 300,000 to Europe from its gigafactory in Shanghai, and the Model Y and Model 3 are the two best selling vehicles in the region (see chart), Both use the Autosteering software but with more restrictions.

Tesla’s Autopilot has been legal in Europe since 2021 when it was approved in the Netherlands, but the autosteering software has more restrictions in Europe, where the Auto-Lane Changing is designed to operate slower and can only be used on roadways with two or more lanes in either direction. The Autosteer also will not make sharp turns and forces the driver to take over control of the vehicle while turning and reminds the driver to return their hands to the wheel after fifteen seconds.

These are both issues that have led to the US recall and the OTA update of the Tesla Model Y, Model X and Model 3 cars. The Dutch regulator said on Friday the tighter restrictions in Europe on Autosteer meant a recall was not necessary.

A failure of the embedded flash memory in the display in Tesla electric cars has led to the recall of 158000 vehicles in 2021.
