The upgraded model will be demonstrated early in 2015 and will have a range further than the 306 miles that Tesla says can be driven with oa single charge of the largest battery option for the company’s Model S.

The Roadster 3.0 package will include a new battery pack, improved aerodynamics with a retrofit aerokit and reduced rolling resistance.

Tesla has declared that Model S owners should not expect a similar upgrade in the near future.

The Roadster convertible was the first Tesla car and first hit the road in 2008 and the upgraded package aims to increase the Roadster’s range by 40% to 50% compared
with the original Roadster.

The original Roadster battery was the first lithium ion battery put into production in any vehicle and  was state of the art in 2008. Tesla claimes to have identified a new cell that has 31% more energy than the original Roadster cell. Using the new cell the company has created a battery pack that delivers roughly 70 kWh in the same
package as the original battery.

In a blog post Tesla says: "There is a set of speeds and driving conditions where we can confidently drive the Roadster over 400 miles.  We will be demonstrating this
in the real world during a non-stop drive from San Francisco to Los Angeles in the early weeks of 2015.”
