In a technology study, automotive tier one Continental has introduced a TFT display for motorbikes. Designed with the specific needs of motorbike riders in mind, the device offers high contrast that makes it readable independently of the lighting situation. In addition, it is rugged enough to withstand the harsh conditions of open-air operation. The display offers a resolution of 480 x 272 pixels which enables it to show rather detailed images.

In cars, TFT displays are about to conquer the dashboard. They enable car designers to implement much more flexible and versatile cockpit concepts including context-sensitive content representation. Increasingly, motorbike manufacturers are interested in this technology since it offers almost unlimited display options to the users. Features currently in demand are displays for trip computers, ambient temperature or settings for the heat grips. In addition, the screen can display the content of the smartphone display including navigation apps or incoming calls.

The device demonstrated can easily be adapted to the needs of any motorbike designer, the company said.
