Thales sets up electronics joint venture in Ukraine

The Ukrainian government is setting up a joint venture for electronics manufacturing with Thales and is in talks with Boeing for development and manufacturing of drones.
With the future of peace talks hanging in the balance, Ukraine’s Minister of Defence, Rustem Umerov, met with several industrial partners in Munich. The Ukroboronprom state manufacturing collective signed the joint venture deal with Thales International for air defence, radars, electronic warfare, tactical communications, and optoelectronic systems.
This follows three agreements signed with Thales in June 2024. The first covered the joint venture, while the second will see Thales will provide extensive maintenance, testing and specialized training for electronic warfare systems. This agreement aims to develop local maintenance capability within Ukraine to reduce repair and maintenance times.
The third deal with Ukrainian UAV and UGV specialist FRDM sees Thales co-develop and manufacture with FRDM an Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS).
UAV systems and the integration of artificial intelligence into military technologies are key. The UK is shipping 30,000 drones to the country as part of the war effort.
“This is the future of the defense industry, and we are interested in co-developing these technologies,” said Umerov.
In the meetings in Munich, Ukraine and Boeing Defense will continue to collaborate on UAV development, as well as with KNDS France and Germany.
