The electric Mini remains British

In January, BMW was considering the electrical version announced for 2019 at Dutch vehicle contract manufacturer Nedcar. In February, the Bavarian carmaker thought about a production in Leipzig or Regensburg. This week now, the company decided to have the vehicle mounted in Oxford like before.

The decision to design and build an electric version of the cult vehicle is in line with BMW’s strategy to offer all its brands and model series with a full electric or plug-in hybrid powertrain in the years from 2020 onwards.

The battery-electric will be a variant of the brand’s core 3-door model enter series production in 2019. The electric powertrain for the e-Mini will be built in BMW’s e-mobility center at the Dingolfing and Landshut plants.

By 2025, BMW expects electrified vehicles (which is not the same as electric vehicles – electrified ones still have an internal combustion engine along with some more or less powerful electric drivetrain) to account for 15 to 15 per cent of sales.

The decision for the assembly at the Mini headquarters in Oxford had fallen because Oxford built the majority of all mini 3-doors. And perhaps because the Mini is so British that it simply could not be produced elsewhere.
