The Fraunhofer COMEDD to become an independent research institution
The former department COMEDD (Center for Organic Materials and Electronic Devices Dresden) of the Fraunhofer IPMS has now reached the pre-stage to an independent institute of the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft (the largest European society for applied
research and development).
Prof. Karl Leo, director of the new Fraunhofer COMEDD, feels very confident that this foundation makes a further concentration and a more effective work on organic light-emitting diodes and solar cells possible. Fraunhofer COMEDD is a central part of Europe´s leading cluster for organic electronic, Organic Electronics Saxony (OES), with more than 1.000 employees. The foundation is an important milestone to move forward in research and development in the field of organic electronics.
Leo sees a large demand for OLED microdisplays at the moment pointing out a new world of applications. According to its director, the new institution opens new perspectives for a strategic development of new business fields.
Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) as area lighting elements and organic solar cells as mobile energy source will be soon popular in everyday life. OLEDs integrated in microchips as microdisplays for interactive data eye-glasses and sensor solutions can revolutionize the world of opto electronic.
