Thierry Breton resigns as EU commissioner
Thierry Breton has resigned as a European commissioner for the internal market with immediate effect.
As commissioner for the internal market, Thierry Breton has been a key part of the EU Chips Act, space strategy and Critical Materials Club, but has also been a vocal critic of social media giants as part of the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA).
The resignation of Breton comes as the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, is appointing a new cabinet. She had asked each member state to provide two names, one male and one female. In a public letter, Breton says he was proposed by the French government as their candidate for the college of commissioners, but that von der Leyen had asked France to withdraw his name.

This was for “personal reasons that in no instance have you discussed directly with me,” said Betron.
“Over the last five years I have relentlessly striven to uphold and advance the common European good, above national and party interests,” he said. “However in the light of these latest development, I have to conclude that I can no longer exercise my duties in the college.”
Von der Leyen and the Commission have not yet responded to the resignation.
