Silicon Carbide (SiC) has seen a massive boost in 2019 with Microchip and On Semiconductor joining STMicroelectronics, Rohm, Cree, Littlefuse and Infineon in production.
The supply of silicon carbide wafers was a focus for 2019. STMicroelectronics initially took a majority stake in Swedish supplier Norstel, then made the deal final by taking it over to become part of its supply chain. At the same time Cree promised a huge expansion of its SiC wafer and device business in the US.

Much of this is driven by the growth of electric vehicles. While Tesla uses SiC devices in its EV inverters, other car makers are looking to adopt silicon carbide techology. 2020 will see may more such deals.
