The top ten foundries in the world – responsible for about 98 percent of sales – saw revenue decline by 18.6 percent compared with 4Q22, according to TrendForce.

The market researcher said top ten sales came in at about US$27.3 billion. The decline is attributed to weak end-market demand on top of some seasonality (see Smartphone production hits ten-year low).

GlobalFoundries was able to overtake United Microelectronics Corp. to secure third position in the ranking. Tower Semiconductor overtook Power Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. (PSMC) to take seventh position. Meanwhile Chinese foundries SMIC and Hua Hong performed better than their peers and gained market share in the falling market.

Market leader TSMC suffered a 16.2 percent QoQ drop in revenue due to weak demand for laptop computers and smartphones, which led to a significant decline in the utilization rates and revenue of the 7/6 nm and 5/4 nm processes, falling over 20% and 17%, respectively. TrendForce expects TSMC’s revenue to fall again in the 2Q23, albeit at a slower pace compared to 1Q23.

Samsung witnessed a decline in both 200mm and 300mm wafer capacity utilization rates, leading to a 36.1 percent Q1 revenue decline.

SMIC posted US$1.46 billion in first-quarter revenue – a 9.8 percent QoQ revenue decline. Revenue from 200mm-diameter wafers fell nearly 30 percent, while revenue from 300mm-diameter wafers saw a slight increase of 1 to 2 percent due to a diverse product portfolio and support from domestic demand in China.
