Already in February 2012, Toshiba entered into an agreement with San Antonio, Texas-based GreenStar to produce the LED luminaires and has since been marketing, selling and distributing the GreenStar products within the United States, Canada and the Caribbean. Now the Japanese company chose to completely take over its business partner. Toshiba Lighting & Technology Corporation is coordinating with Toshiba International Corporation to manage the relationship with GreenStar and will continue selling its products in North America.

“We were attracted to GreenStar for its innovative product design and focus on developing luminaires that make the most of LED technology to address the market’s desire for more energy efficient and low maintenance products,” said Ken Honeycutt, President, Toshiba LED Lighting Systems Division. “Together, we will produce advanced eco-friendly LED lighting systems."

GreenStar’s product designs include photometric controls that deliver superior light distribution and greater uniformity than conventional high intensity discharge (HID) lighting. Additionally, GreenStar’s roadway product includes a built-in photocell that has a rated life that exceeds the life of a conventional NEMA twist lock photocell by as much as three times, delivering a lasting and low maintenance alternative for roadway lighting. In addition to reduced energy consumption and long product life, these luminaires contain no mercury or lead, making them an environmentally friendly lighting solution.

The LED luminaires are direct replacements for conventional HID lighting, such as high-pressure sodium or metal halide, which requires frequent maintenance and high wattage usage. In contrast, Toshiba’s LED luminaires illuminate the same areas as traditional light sources.
