NEC opted for the Toshiba FFSATM (Fit Fast Structured Array) flexible custom LSI and has moved to the commercial production phase of its iPASOLINK high capacity microwave communication equipment for mobile networks, using this device.

Toshiba says that its product addresses development criteria such as performance, power, and time to market; the FFSA uses licensed technology from BaySand Inc. FFSA offers a flexible custom LSI solution to replace broad FPGA series and ASICs, with pre-designed masters featuring configurable I/Os, SerDes (Serialiser Deserialiser), and SRAMs which can be configured according to the application’s requirements. FFSA supports various types of SerDes protocols for wired and wireless networking, as well as storage and consumer applications.

Toshiba positions FFSA solutions as a new choice for custom LSI development to help customers optimise their system design and to enable timely product development.

“NEC has adopted FFSA for its water-resistant, durable, compact microwave system iPASOLINK AOR (All Outdoor Radio) and will expand the adoption of FFSA to other iPASOLINK systems,” said Mr. Atsushi Noro, deputy general manager, Mobile Wireless Solutions Division, NEC. “By changing from conventional FPGAs to a FFSA, NEC was able to achieve high performance with low power consumption, as well as a timely product launch to address the needs of the quickly growing mobile network,” added Noro.
