Toyota promotes open source driving simulator

The open-source driving simulator is intended to ensure the stable functioning of automated vehicles in countless traffic situations that cannot always be tested under real traffic conditions. CARLA offers a variety of different test conditions and can be easily designed and extended to meet special project requirements.

With Toyota’s financial contribution, the CARLA team aims to increase the number of developers and improve the simulator’s capabilities. “With CARLA, we want to democratize research into automated driving and train and test the artificial intelligence behind the wheel beyond the boundaries of the real world,” says Dr. Antonio López, responsible for the project at the CVC. “This is achieved through the joint work of CARLA engineers, artists and scientists. Of course, we still have a lot of work to do to bring the system to full maturity, and that’s why Toyota’s support is so valuable.”

With CARLA, TRI once again supports an open source platform. “We achieve technological progress and growth through cooperation,” explains Vangelis Kokkevis, Director of Driving Simulation at TRI. “We support the development of a common open simulation platform in order to better exchange information, codes and data with our partners from science and industry in the future”.

CARLA is not Toyota’s first commitment to open source. For two consecutive years, TRI has made significant contributions to the Open Source Robotics Foundation, which provides the global robotics community with access to open software and development tools. The TRI is also the primary donor to Drake, an open C++ toolbox from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Research Laboratory.
