The move is a consequence of the EU-wide restrictions with regard of the inefficient magnetics technology effective 2017. Two manufacturing sites are affected with a total of 151 workers. "We know since years that one day the end of the magnetics technology will come in sight", said Tridonic CEO Alfred Feldner. "Amidst the ongoing technological upheaval towards LED lighting, we have to reposition ourselves towards more future-proof technologies."

Between 2008 and 2013, the sales figures of magnetic ballasts were in a constant decline by 60%. In FY 2012/2013, sales of magnetic ballasts and related products were only 9.4 % of the company’s total turnover.

The decision will enable the company to intensify its focus on LED technologies, Feldner said. In FY2012/1013, the company achieved 18.9 percent of its business with LED products.

Feldner added that the company is on the verge of introducing a new generation of LED drivers. "These drivers will be one of our most pronounced core projects at Tridonic", Feldner said.
