Confusingly the N4X process is described by TSMC not as a 4nm process but as the first of its HPC-focused technology offerings in the 5nm family. The X designation is reserved for TSMC technologies that are developed specifically for HPC products.

N4X offers a performance boost of up to 15 percent over N5 and of 4 percent over N4P at 1.2V.

N4X can achieve drive voltages beyond 1.2V to deliver additional performance. Customers can also draw on the common design rules of the N5 process to accelerate the development of their N4X products. TSMC expects N4X to enter risk production in the 1H23.

TSMC said that HPC is the fastest growing part of its business. N4X is compatible with TSMC’s advanced packaging technology known as 3DFabric.
