TSMC, UMC to visit India to consider manufacturing
A delegation from Taiwan, including representatives from foundries TSMC and UMC, will visit India to investigate setting up wafer fabs, according to local reports.
The date of the visit has not been set but could happen in the next few weeks, reports said.
India has been lobbying Taiwan hard to help it enter the semiconductor sector with talks taking place in 2021 and carrying on into 2022 (see India asks Taiwan to include wafer fab in trade deal).
Late in 2021 Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government unveiled an incentives plan worth $10 billion to try and attract chip and display makers to India, offering to cover as much as half of a project’s cost (see India details wafer fab subsidy scheme favoring 28nm).
That plans has received applications from a startup venture called ISMC supported by Tower semiconductor and a venture between Vedanta and Foxconn. Nonetheless the India government reportedly extended the application period indefinitely to try and attract a big name such as TSMC or Samsung.
A Hindustan Times report, said that Indian officials have identified potential locations for wafer fabs with land, semiconductor-grade water and reliable power infrastructures.
