TSMC’s sales jumped in January, UMC’s not so much

January’s net revenue at leading foundry TSMC jumped sequentially and turned the company’s sales contraction of 2023 into year-on-year growth.
TSMC’s revenue in January 2024 was approximately NT$215.78 billion (about US$6.88 billion), an increase of 22.4 percent from December 2023 and an increase of 7.9 percent compared with January 2023.
As is usual no commentary was given with the monthly sales figures, although the company has previously indicated that demand for AI chips is helping maintain demand at for leading-edge manufacturing processes. Company executives have said they expect this to persist through 2024.
Net sales at fellow Taiwanese foundry UMC were approximately NT$19.01 billion (about US$606 million) up sequentially by 12.0 percent but unable to produce an annual increase for the company. January 2024 sales were down 3.0 percent compared with January 2023.
