TSMC’s sales slide: foundry suffers third month of decline
In September TSMC’s sales were NT$88,579 million (about $2.92 billion), down 1.3 percent on the same month in 2016. The foundry’s sales for the third quarter were down 3.2 percent on the sales in 3Q16. No reason has been given for the falls in sales.
Despite these falls, and others during the year, TSMC is still showing a year-to-date increase in sales. For the first nine months of 2017 TSMC’s sales revenue is NT$699,877 million (about $23 billion), up 2.1 percent on the same period in 2016.
Rival foundry UMC had sales of NT$11,865 (about $390 million) in September. This was also down on the same month a year before – by 6.8 percent – but UMC saw annual sales increases in July and August.
UMC’s year-to-date sales figure is NT$112,654 million (about $3.7 billion), up 2.8 percent on the first nine months of 2016.
