u-blox has launched its first automotive-grade WiFi 7 module for in-vehicle infotainment and telematics.

The RUBY-W2 is base don the Snapdragon Auto Connectivity Platform and the QCA6797AQ from Qualcomm and supports 2×2 MIMO Multi-Link Operation (MLO). This provides simultaneous performance on 5 GHz and 6 GHz bands, overcoming congestion that may occur in the 2.4 GHz band. The module also has Bluetooth 5.4 with support for Bluetooth LE Audio, enabling energy-efficient, high-quality audio streaming in the vehicle rather than using cables.

The module enables firmware Over-the-Air (FOTA) updates as well as high-speed data off-loading. It uses the same 23 x 23mm / 23 x 25mm form factor as Qualcomm’s reference design, allowing migration between technology generations and is made in Europe for a more secure supply chain for car makers. It comes with various filter and antenna combinations to suit different application needs.

According to the TSR Wireless Connectivity Market Report 2024, the attach rate of WiFi for in-vehicle infotainment and telematics control unit applications will increase sharply over the next five years.

“Not only does the RUBY-W2 bring the benefits of WiFi 7 to the automotive market, it also opens up new use cases for both Qualcomm Technologies and u-blox in the infotainment and telematics segments,” says Riccardo Calabro, Senior Director of Product Marketing & Sales at Qualcomm Germany.

This comes as u-blox is closing its cellular IoT module business with immediate effect.

Early samples of the RUBY-W2 series are available now.
