Organized by the General Services Administration (GSA) and the State Department, the inter-agency forum is intended to help government agencies collaborate in Blockchain-related initiatives. In order to participate in the forum, each agency team must submit a potential use case for Blockchain technology in its mission.

At the forum, participants will learn about advances in Blockchain technology, discuss possible use cases within the federal government, and set an agenda for working together to evaluate and implement it among their missions. A U.S. Federal Blockchain Atlas and roadmap for the next six months will be developed laying out how agencies can collaborate to achieve their goals and support the creation of shared services for Blockchain technology.

The Blockchain Forum is not the first government initiative pursuing this technology. Recently, the Department of State created the Blockchain@State project for the purpose of researching Blockchain technology applications for use in US foreign policy and data tracking.

The U.S. Federal Blockchain Forum is a part of GSA’s Emerging Citizen Technology program, organized in partnership with the Secretary of State’s Office of Global Partnerships and GSA’s Office of Information Technology Category. Launched earlier this year, the Emerging Citizen Technology program is described as “an open-sourced pilot to make public service information available to consumer Intelligent Personal Assistants (IPAs) for the home and office, such as Amazon Alexa, Microsoft Cortana, Google Assistant, and Facebook Messenger.”
