The companies announced that Nvidia technology will be used for the AI computing system in the Uber Advanced Technologies Group’s planned fleet of self-driving cars and freight trucks. The AI platform will run the algorithms that enable the autonomous vehicles to perceive the environment around them, predict what may happen next, and quickly choose the best course of action, even in complex environments.

“The future of transportation will be transformed by mobility services,” says Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang. “Convenient, affordable mobility-as-a-service will reshape cities and society, and help support the billion-person increase in the world’s population over the next decade. Autonomous vehicles are the critical technology to making mobility services pervasive.

Uber, like many companies in the automotive space, has been working on self-driving technology for the last few years. In the fall of 2016 it launched city trials of self-driving cars in Pittsburgh, PA, and a second pilot program in Phoenix, AZ in early 2017. According to the company, self-driving Uber vehicles have completed more than 50,000 passenger trips and have logged over two million autonomous miles.

“Developing safe, reliable autonomous vehicles requires sophisticated AI software and a high-performance graphics processing unit (GPU) computing engine in the vehicle,” says Eric Meyhofer, head of Uber Advanced Technologies Group. “Nvidia is a key technology provider to Uber as we bring scalable self-driving cars and trucks to market.”

According to Uber, it began using Nvidia GPU computing technology in its first test fleet of Volvo XC90 SUVs, and currently uses high-performance Nvidia processors to run deep neural networks in both its self-driving ride-hailing cars and self-driving freight trucks.
