Ulrich Schumacher to lead Zumtobel into the LED era
Supervisory board and the outgoing management conflicted over the right strategy of the company during the important phase of the technology shift to LEDs. Details were not disclosed, but observers believe it is likely that the vertical range of LED manufacturing played a role. This would be in line with the wording chosen by the supervisory board chairman, Juergen Zumtobel, to welcome Ulrich Schumacher as a "technology expert with proven track record of entrepreneurial success". He added: "Particularly in the important phase of the technology shift to LEDs and electronics, new opportunities are opening up for lighting both in terms of functionality and design".
While Schumacher does not have experience with LED manufacturing, he spent most of its professional career in semiconductor manufacturing – starting with Siemens, where he oversaw the Semiconductor Group, to Chinese semiconductor manufacturer Grace. Certainly the most visible phase of his career was his during his term as CEO of Infineon – he headed the company during its going public till its rather spectacular leave in 2004.
While Schumacher’s commitment is characterized as "interim", no time limit for his activity at Zumtobel has been specified.
