Ultra-low-power buck regulator boosts battery life in wearable, IoT apps

With a 90% efficiency rating and consuming 180 nA quiescent current, the ADP5301 buck regulator is designed to deliver maximum power for a longer period of time than previously achievable. It is ideally suited for Internet of Things (IoT) applications, including wireless sensor networks and wearable devices such as fitness bands and smartwatches.

The device is housed in a WLCSP package that measures less than 3.1-mm² (1.65 × 1.87 mm), which makes it suitable for small form factors. A 6.5-V to 2.05-V input voltage range enables wide range of battery sources or architectures; selectable, low-noise forced PWM mode with low output voltage ripple powers noise-sensitive analogue loads up to 500 mA output current capability; an integrated voltage supervisory function increases overall system reliability.

The output voltage is set by resistor selection, in two factory-option ranges of 1.2 to 3.6 V, or 0.8 to 5.0 V. ±1.5% output accuracy is maintained over full temperature range in PWM mode – output is up to 50 mA in hysteresis mode, or 500 mA in PWM mode.
