With the demonstration vehicle DEEVA, currently under development at the University of Parma’s Laboratory for Machine Vision and Intelligent Systems (VisLab), the researchers will highlight the progress currently taking place in the field of autonomous driving. DEEVA, to be introduced to the public in late summer, will incorporate systems to compute distances and motion as well as techniques to blend data from cameras and laser sensors – all in real-time. In addition, the researchers focus on further developing the Human-Machine Interface (HMI). To handle the system-critical real-time requirements, the computing platforms will run under the Neutrino real-time operating system from QNX. DEEVA will be equipped with a unique and extremely comprehensive set of sensors that provides a complete 3D representation of the vehicle’s environment. To generate this representation, high amounts of data have to be processed at very high real-time requirements.

VisLab’s particular expertise lies in the field of environment recognition by means of sensors. In 2013, VisLab introduced an vehicle capable of driving autonomously through the rush-hour traffic in a city. The sensors and algorithms enabled the vehicle to handle complex traffic situations like roundabouts, traffic lights and pedestrian crossings.
