US should spend $34 billion on chip R&D, says report
Although the Semiconductor Research Corp. (SRC) is an international consortium featuring members from many countries besides the US, including South Korea, Taiwan, Japan, The Netherlands and the UK, it is calling for moves to maintain and strengthen US leadership in Information and Communications Technology (ICT).
The Semiconductor Industry Association’s (SIA’s) and SRC’s decadal plan calls for a tripling of the US federal budget to contribute $3.4 billion annually throughout the coming decade to be spend on large-scale industry-relevant semiconductor research.
The Decadal Plan outlines chip research and funding priorities that will spur growth in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing and advanced wireless communications.
The plan outlines five areas experiencing or that need seismic shifts: smart sensing; memory and storage; communications; hardware-based security; energy consumption and efficiency.
The SIA and SRC reckon that following the plan would add $161 billion to US gross domestic product and create half a million jobs in the US over the next 10 years.
“The federal government must invest ambitiously in semiconductor research to keep America on top in semiconductors and the game-changing future technologies they enable,” said John Neuffer, CEO of the SIA, in a statement.
The full Decadal Plan is scheduled to be published in December 2020. SIA and SRC will host a virtual workshop coinciding with the release of the full report.
