The VLP-16 Puck is the company’s most popular sensor, and is the smallest and most advanced product in its 3D LiDAR range. According to the company, it is now offering the VLP-16 to its customers around the world for up to a 50 percent cost reduction.

“Demand for our VLP-16s grew tremendously in 2017,” says David Hall, Founder and CEO, Velodyne LiDAR. “As a result, we increased capacity and now can pass along savings as cost reduction to our customers.”

“We want to make 2018 a year of optimism for the autonomous vehicle, especially as the first waves of robocabs hit the road,” he says. “Our goal is the democratization of transportation safety by making it accessible to every man, woman, and child in the world as quickly as possible.”

The company’s sensors are being produced at its large-scale automated manufacturing San Jose Megafactory facility, which opened last year. Expanding production and developing automated manufacturing for the LiDAR sensors at the Megafactory, says Hall, has enabled the company to meet the growing demand for the sensors.

Originally launched in 2016 at a price of about $8,000, the VLP-16 is a small, accurate, reliable, and affordable sensor for real-time 3D vision with 100 meters of range and a 360-degree surround field-of-view. It is one of the most widely adopted LiDAR sensors ever made, according to the company, and is being used in a number of different industries, including automotive, freight, 3D mapping, unmanned aerial vehicles, industrial, and robotics.
