Vintage 78rpm records digitised on the Internet

Many of the resin discs are too fragile to play, but they have been digitised with different types of stylus and with all the analogue noise included.

There are also over 50k uploaded recordings from users as part of the Great 78 Project, although over half the recordings have no date.

There is the “best” stylus version (according to an audio engineer at George Blood Co) that is renamed to be compatible with Apple’s iTunes, but all the stylii recordings are there in flat and equalized formats, and each of those in FLAC and MP3 formats. These can be downloaded for research and preservation purposes using Linux or Mac command lines.

The Archive is currently automatically matching the recordings against 78discography.com and discogs.com, but many are done by hand, finding entries in billboard magazine and on DAHR, as well as adding the metadata.
