Virtusa has made a clear move into the semiconductor space with the acquisition of SmartSoC Solutions, adding chip design and IC engineering to its portfolio. The deal extends Virtusa’s reach from software and cloud services down to silicon, as demand for AI-driven hardware continues to surge.

The news highlights how IT services companies are moving closer to the chip design ecosystem. It also underlines the growing convergence between semiconductor engineering, AI infrastructure, and cloud-based platforms.

From chip to cloud

With SmartSoC onboard, Virtusa says it can now offer full-stack services spanning silicon, embedded systems, networks, cloud platforms, and applications. SmartSoC brings deep experience in semiconductor engineering, including VLSI, physical design, verification, and embedded software, strengthening Virtusa’s ability to support customers developing next-generation chips.

The timing reflects broader market trends. AI workloads, data center expansion, and edge computing are driving the need for power-efficient, high-performance silicon. By adding in-house chip design capabilities, Virtusa aims to help customers shorten development cycles and speed products to market.

“The acquisition of SmartSoC is transformational for Virtusa. It immediately establishes us as a key player in the high-growth semiconductor engineering space, completing our vision for a full-stack offering that can serve clients from the foundational silicon layer all the way through to the customer application,” said Nitesh Banga, Chief Executive Officer of Virtusa.

Scaling talent and delivery

SmartSoC adds more than 1,400 engineers to Virtusa, with skills covering IC design and embedded systems. The company also brings an established delivery footprint in India, including a tier 2 center in Hubli, supporting Virtusa’s global delivery strategy.

“I am excited about what this brings to our customers. With Virtusa’s cloud and application layer services, we are able to offer chip to cloud solutions, helping customers get to market faster,” said Scott Houghton, CEO, North America & Chief Business Officer, SmartSoC Solutions.

Together, the two companies are positioning themselves to address rising demand across the semiconductor and AI technology landscape, as chip design becomes an increasingly strategic capability beyond traditional silicon vendors.
